Compare on cost per year, not cost per square foot
Almost every material comparison online stops at the installed price, and that's the number least likely to tell you which option is cheaper. A driveway, a floor, or a lawn is a purchase you make more than once — the question is how many times. The framing we use on every page here is cost per square foot per year: take the installed price, add the maintenance the material actually demands over its life, divide by the years it realistically lasts.
Carpet at $5.50 per square foot installed sounds cheaper than vinyl plank at $6.50. But carpet gets replaced around year 9 and professionally cleaned every 18 months, so it costs about $0.90 per square foot per year against vinyl's $0.45. The cheaper material is twice the money. The same reversal shows up in driveways, where concrete's higher quote wins over 30 years, and it fails to show up in lawns, where seed stays cheaper than sod no matter how far out you run the clock.
Two rules keep the math honest. First, pick a window long enough to contain at least one replacement of the shorter-lived option — 15 years for flooring, 30 for paving, 5 for turf — because a window shorter than that always flatters whatever is cheapest today. Second, weigh the answer against how long you'll actually own the place. If you're selling in three years, lifetime cost is somebody else's problem and the lower quote genuinely wins. Every comparison below shows its arithmetic so you can swap in your own prices and horizon.
