What the quote should specify

Both materials fail from the base up, so the line item that matters most isn't the surface — it's what's under it. For asphalt, ask for 6–8 inches of compacted aggregate base and a 2.5–3 inch compacted surface course (many residential bids quietly quote 1.5 inches). For concrete, ask for a 4-inch slab minimum — 5 inches if trucks or an RV park on it — at 4,000 psi, over 4–6 inches of compacted base, with control joints saw-cut within 24 hours at intervals no greater than 2.5 times the slab thickness in feet. Fiber mesh or #4 rebar on 18-inch centers is worth the small upcharge in freeze-thaw country. A cheap bid almost always means a thin base, and a thin base means the driveway you're comparing lasts half as long as the numbers above.

How soon after installation can I seal each one?

New asphalt should cure 6–12 months before the first sealcoat — sealing too early traps the oils and leaves a soft, scuffing surface. After that, every 3–5 years is the standard cadence; more often than that just wastes money and builds a brittle film. Concrete is the opposite: apply a penetrating silane or siloxane sealer about 30 days after the pour, before the first winter, because salt resistance is highest on concrete that has never been salted.

Will a concrete driveway crack, and does that mean it failed?

It will crack — concrete always does as it shrinks during curing. The purpose of control joints is to decide where. A hairline crack that follows a saw-cut joint is the system working. What signals a real problem is a crack wider than about an eighth of an inch that crosses joints, a vertical offset between slab sections, or surface flaking and popouts, which indicate spalling from de-icing salt or a poorly finished, over-watered pour.

Can I put asphalt or concrete over an existing gravel driveway?

Often yes, and it saves real money because a well-compacted gravel drive is already most of the base. The gravel needs to be the right material — angular crushed stone, not rounded river rock — graded, compacted, and free of soft spots.
