Choose asphalt if

- Appearance is part of the project. Broom finish with saw-cut control joints, exposed aggregate, or a stamped border give design options asphalt simply doesn't have.
- The driveway is visible from the street in a higher-price neighborhood. Appraisers and buyers read concrete as the permanent option, and it matches walkways and a front porch slab.
- You don't want a maintenance calendar. Concrete's sealing is optional; asphalt's really isn't if you want the full 25 years.
What the quote should specify
Both materials fail from the base up, so the line item that matters most isn't the surface — it's what's under it. For asphalt, ask for 6–8 inches of compacted aggregate base and a 2.5–3 inch compacted surface course (many residential bids quietly quote 1.5 inches). For concrete, ask for a 4-inch slab minimum — 5 inches if trucks or an RV park on it — at 4,000 psi, over 4–6 inches of compacted base, with control joints saw-cut within 24 hours at intervals no greater than 2.5 times the slab thickness in feet. How soon after installation can I seal each one?
New asphalt should cure 6–12 months before the first sealcoat — sealing too early traps the oils and leaves a soft, scuffing surface. Concrete is the opposite: apply a penetrating silane or siloxane sealer about 30 days after the pour, before the first winter, because salt resistance is highest on concrete that has never been salted.
Will a concrete driveway crack, and does that mean it failed?
