Gravel vs Mulch for Landscape Beds

Decorative gravel costs $40–$80 per cubic yard in bulk ($4–$8 a bag) and stays put essentially forever; hardwood mulch costs $30–$60 per cubic yard ($3–$6 a bag) and disappears at roughly a third to a half of its depth every year. That single sentence is the whole comparison: mulch is cheaper to buy and more expensive to own, gravel is the reverse. What the price tables never tell you is that the two materials do opposite things to the ground underneath. Mulch is a slow-release soil amendment that happens to look tidy. Gravel is a permanent, heat-storing, pH-shifting mineral layer that happens to suppress weeds. Choose on what the bed contains, not on what the yard charges.

Cost over time (200 sq ft bed at 3 inches, 10-year window)

Start with the volume, because that's where most bad estimates begin. Three inches is 0.25 ft of depth, so 200 sq ft × 0.25 ft = 50 cubic feet, or 50 ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards — call it 1.9. That's about 2.6 tons of gravel or roughly 1,300 pounds of mulch, which is also the difference between one wheelbarrow afternoon and three.

Bottom line: gravel runs about $272 against mulch's $392 across ten years on this bed — roughly $120 less, or 30% cheaper per year — and the gap keeps widening. Mulch crosses gravel's cumulative spend early — by the end of year 5 mulch has cost $86 + (5 × $34) = $256 while gravel has cost $154 up front plus $50 of weed control plus the $18 top-up = $222 — and it never comes back, because mulch keeps adding $34 a year against gravel's $10. Push the window to 20 years and gravel adds maybe $150 while mulch adds another $340. Two honest caveats: bagged buying flips the near-term picture, since 1.9 cu yd of mulch is about 26 two-cubic-foot bags at $4.50 = $117 while the same volume of gravel in half-cubic-foot bags is over 100 bags and wildly uneconomic; and this math counts only materials, not the fact that a mulched bed's plants generally need less water and less replacement than the same plants baking under stone.

What each one does to the soil underneath

This is the part that decides the choice for anyone with living plants in the bed. Hardwood mulch is wood, and wood rots — that's the feature. Over a season, soil fungi and bacteria break the bottom inch into humus, which is why the layer thins by a third to a half and why you top it up. That decomposition builds organic matter, improves water-holding capacity, and feeds earthworms; it also briefly ties up nitrogen at the mulch-soil interface, which matters only if you till fresh mulch into the soil rather than leaving it on top. Keep it 2–4 inches deep and pull it back 2–3 inches from trunks and stems — piled against bark ("mulch volcanoes") it holds moisture against the plant and invites rot and rodents.

Gravel does the opposite of all of that. It adds no organic matter ever, so bed soil under stone slowly degrades toward whatever it was when you covered it. Limestone, dolomite, and marble chip release fines that push soil pH upward, which is fine for lavender, yucca, agave, and most Mediterranean and desert plants and quietly fatal to azaleas, blueberries, hydrangeas, rhododendrons, and anything else that wants acidic ground — use granite, basalt, or river rock if you have acid-lovers. The thermal effect is the bigger one: a stone layer absorbs sun all day and radiates it into the root zone at night, running bed temperatures 10–20°F above a mulched bed and raising irrigation demand on exactly the plants least equipped to handle it. Gravel's natural home is a bed that is mostly hardscape, mostly xeric plants, or mostly nothing — a foundation strip, a drip line, a dry creek, a walkway edge, the first five feet around a house in a fire zone.

Common questions

Do I need landscape fabric under either one?

Under gravel, effectively yes — without a separating layer the stone works down into the soil, and in three or four years you're topping up a bed that's half buried. Use a woven or spun-bonded geotextile, not the perforated plastic sold as "weed block." Under mulch, no, and it's actively counterproductive: fabric blocks the mulch from reaching the soil it's supposed to be feeding, so the mulch decomposes into a layer of dirt sitting on plastic, which is where weeds then germinate. In both cases fabric buys you three to five good years, not permanence — weeds ultimately root in the debris that accumulates on top of it, not in the soil below.

How much do I actually need, and how do I order it?

Area in square feet × depth in feet ÷ 27 = cubic yards. For a 200 sq ft bed at 3 inches that's 1.85 cu yd, and you should order 2 — bulk yards sell in half- and full-yard increments and running short means a second delivery fee. Bulk beats bags above about 1 cubic yard (13.5 two-cubic-foot mulch bags) once delivery is included, and delivery typically runs $50–$120 within a short radius. Can I put gravel over existing mulch, or mulch over existing gravel?

Gravel over mulch is a bad idea and a common one: the mulch keeps decomposing underneath, the bed level drops several inches over two years, and the stone settles into a soft, uneven layer that's now permanently mixed with rotting wood. Rake the mulch out first, then lay fabric, then stone. Mulch over gravel is the harder conversion — you can top-dress with 3 inches of mulch and it will look right for a season, but every cultivation, planting hole, and heavy rain brings stone back to the surface, and you'll be picking rock out of that bed for years. If you're switching to mulch, screen the gravel out properly or accept that the bed will be a permanent mix.

Bottom line

Gravel for foundation strips, xeric and lightly planted beds, slopes, windy sites, fire-defensible space, and anywhere in the arid West — cheapest over any window past year six and close to maintenance-free. Mulch for anything you're actually growing, for soil that needs building, for beds you might redesign, and for most of the country east of the Rockies where it's both the horticultural and the aesthetic default. If the bed has plants in it and you're undecided, mulch — it costs about $12 more a year on a 200 sq ft bed and the plants will tell you it was worth it.
